Where the War on Terror Is

December 29, 2009

The War on Terror has most definitely shifted: terrorists are massacring Pakistani’s.

I churn each time I hear of terrorist attacks since 9/11, and mostly since then, those attacks have been on Pakistan. This weeks suicide bombings on religious processions in Karachi during the month of Mahurrum, (a somber time of reflection, considered sacred for many Muslims) are particularly unnerving.

I’ve lived in Karachi and was there until 2001: suicide bombings were unheard of before 9/11 and even though Karachi is a relatively chaotic city, never has it been victim to such consistent horror. In my lifetime, Pakistan has never suffered such widespread violence and insecurity. I’ve already written about the deteriorating state of affairs post 9/11, so today i’ll share a links to a BBC slideshow and article capturing the recent atrocities :

SLIDESHOW: Karachi March Attacked

ARTICLE : Pakistan’s Recount Horror of Suicide Attack

When the Economist, pundits and politicians declare Pakistan the most dangerous place in the world, important to remember is that it really is the most dangerous place: for Pakistanis.

  1. You, like most urban Pakistanis, were probably oblivious to what was happening in Pakistan during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, and the two decades after the Soviets and the Americans left in 1989 …….?

The fact that Pakistan in those decades, turned into a systematic breeding ground of Terrorists, indoctrinated, trained, and armed by the state of Pakistan, probably never touched your life.

The killing of innocent civilians in Mumbai, by the Pakistani nationals, also probably did not move you much … !

Now that Pakistan has started reaping the fruits of what it had sowed, you Pakistanis have woken up to this danger…. !

    • Nope. I’m not oblivious to the detriments of cooperating in the Soviet Afghan war. In fact, i write about them regularly, and many people comment on that issue. (you’ll find those articles here). I make a case that much of the violence we’re seeing now is a direct result of that cooperation.

How on earth you jump from assumption to assumption, and to an especially horrendous one declaring killing of innocents in Mumbai didn’t move me, is outrageous. Your inattention to the jist of my piece displays a disregard for victims of terror today.

After reading my piece, you jump to negative, entirely unfounded assumptions which are preconceived and make no mention of the plight of victims of terror today.

Shame on you. “Terrorism Anywhere is Terrorism Everywhere” (secretary Hillary Clinton). Whether the victims are in Karachi, Mumbai, New York or anywhere else, innocent civilians, regardless of any state’s history should not be blamed, nor do they deserve such atrocities.

    • well NEEL123,

most of us are very familiar of your hatred towards Pakistan that you have yourself revealed to us our blogs. I have noticed the pattern of your comments at various Pakistani blogs.

We know how much deep India is involved in this shit. Did you ever gave a second thought to why your entire Anti Terrorism Squad was assassinated in front of Police and Public during Mumbai Attacks. Entire team of that grate man. Why Ajmal Kassab was wearing a Hindu Band!

Hate Pakistan as much as you want, Pakistan has a corrupt and weak Leaders, if one day Pakistan gets a sincere Leadership, you will see how high we can go. That is that fact, that many Pakistanis know fully well. After every night, there is a morning. We are waiting for the morning to shine.

  2. Actually I came on this post to say, I agree with what you have said. Pakistan, espacially Karachi has never ever been under attack of these kinds of Suicide attacks, until recently.

The Gov has failed in letting the public know who the real enemy is. No one who has an “Islamist” agenda would do this, because they know they will loose public support. Who gains benefit from this henious attack, Allah knows best, there are a lot of speculations about it.

  3. The soviets and the Americans left Afghanistan in 1989.

Can you explain what did the Pakistani Govt, the Military and the ISI did since then ?

Blaming the Americans for all the evil is not the cure for Pakistan. It is time for re-thinking the evil policies of the past, like using terror as instrument of Foreign policy.

Why is there no one in Pakistan to stand-up and speak in straight language against these evil policies…. ?

    • Neel, again: making such grand statements without having complete information doesn’t make for good discussion.

In fact, many of my previous posts do “stand up and speak in straight language” against radical militants.

And no one here is blaming America (i certainly don’t) for today’s evils.

My jist is that regardless of history at this point, fact is, this evil exists and must be eradicated. Victims of terrorism don’t need finger pointing, they need help. And Pakistani’s are the biggest victims of terrorism today.

    • who is blaiming America here?

No one can blame America solely, nor Pakistan alone like you are doing.

What Pakistan was doing: Taking care of millions of Afghan refugees in Pakistan. Trying to control the civil war next door that could have entered into Pakistan!
You need to learn the history of this entire hisotrical episode. Plz be open when you study it, if you decide to study it!

  6. @ umersultan,
Very nice brother ……are you also a victim of the misinformation campaign of Zaid Hamid, Shireen Mazari and their likes ?

Wearing a hindu band to mislead the world, does not change the truth !

Since 1989, every terror attack across the globe has had a Pakistani finger print. Needless to say, India was the target number one, and no one cared until 9/11 happened !

Do you think the Americans do not know what the Pakistani Army and the ISI were upto, and what they are doing even today …… ?

    Like

    • haha, no I don’t buy what Zaid Hamid says, spend some time on my blog before you try to impose things on me.
We also know what India’s role is in India’s aembassy in Afghanistan, Baloch resistince. 5 yrs ago or so, Pak military arrested a Undercover RAW agend from within the Pakistani army, he is still in prison.

Wait what are you accusing Pakistan for, when Red Revolution was taking place, your India was siding with Communist Soviet Union and Pakistanis gave lives for freedom.

      • Pakistanis fighting the Soviets, does not give Pakistan a blank cheque to do what ever they like….

This argument does not fly any more, because Pakistan was paid to do what they did.

The Americans know it too well, that Pakistan’s fighting the Soviets had a single motive, to earn billions of dollars and diplomatic support against India … !
